The Algeciras Port Authority (APBA) participated, last November 22 and 23, in the 1st Congress of Artificial Intelligence of Andalusia, organized by the Junta de Andalucía, through the Digital Agency of Andalusia (ADA, by its acronym in Spanish) and held at the Palacio de Congresos de Granada.
The Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification, Antonio Sanz, was in charge of inaugurating an event that, for two days and under the slogan “Transforming the way“, brought together more than 170 national and international experts in AI, in order to address the trends that mark the development of this disruptive technology and anticipate the keys that will guide its evolution in the coming years. In addition, with more than 2,000 attendees, as well as the presence of 65 organizations, universities and companies such as Google, Microsoft, Telefónica, IBM, VMware, T-Systems Iberia and Fujitsu, among others, the initiative served to promote collaborative networks between institutions, financial institutions, research centers, companies, universities and other agents of the innovation system.
During his speech at the opening ceremony, Antonio Sanz, highlighted the 46 practical cases of AI application that have already been developed in Andalusia, among which he highlighted the Port of Algeciras as one of the references, and remarked his commitment because “Andalusia continues to position itself as a pioneer and benchmark region in the application of AI”.
On the second day, it was the turn of Jesús Medina, Head of the Technological Development Area of the APBA, who presented the digital transformation and innovation strategy of the Port of Algeciras and presented several of the projects already developed in the field of artificial intelligence, such as the intelligent real-time reading system for vehicle and container license plates for their traceability using Deep Learning, the Simulation of the Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) process, using Machine Learning and the Vision Row project, consisting of the intelligent detection of truck queues and the estimation of waiting times at port accesses, using intelligent artificial vision.
The event also featured an extensive exhibition area of more than 2,400 square meters with the presence of leading companies in the industry and a full agenda with talks, debates, demonstrations and workshops where knowledge and experiences could be shared with leading AI professionals with the ultimate goal of jointly designing the path towards a future that is already present.
