Vodafone, a pioneer in the deployment of the commercial 5G network in Spain, has developed a pilot in the Port of Algeciras, considered one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean, to test the use of 5G technology in the control and security processes of the Algeciras Port Authority (APBA). For this purpose, a special 5G network deployment has been carried out, covering all the facilities and surface of the Port.
This pilot experience has demonstrated that 5G technology helps to streamline and optimize the management, operation, safety and security systems of the Port. The solution carried out allows the identification of problems and, therefore, the optimization of time and efficiency in their resolution, increasing the autonomy and productivity of the operators.
Thanks to 5G technology, during the execution of the pilot, the port’s security and safety systems have achieved greater ubiquity and agility. For this purpose, Augmented Reality (AR) has been used for the representation of asset information on the ground in a geolocalized manner and in real time. This allows, for example, the improvement of response times and efficiency in the resolution of incidents, combining local inspection with access to technical data of the different systems anywhere and in real time, and offering a more dynamic and rapid visualization of different contexts (ships, infrastructure and pipelines, to name a few).
In addition, real-time streaming video transmission has been verified to ensure port monitoring for the availability of higher quality, uninterrupted video. 5G technology has also made it possible to include new mobile video recording devices that did not transmit real-time images and complement the existing fixed CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) system.
In addition to these benefits, there is also a faster response time for the qualified personnel in the offices, who also gain in comfort and see their flexibility increase significantly.
The supplier with which we have worked in this use case has been Virtualware.
5G Andalucia Pilot
This project is part of the “5G Andalusia Pilot” initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, through Red.es, and is being developed by Vodafone and Huawei. Presented last November 2019 in Seville, it includes 33 use cases that will apply the benefits of 5G technology in the sectors of energy, industry, smart cities, tourism, agriculture, health and dependence, security, emergencies and defense, society and digital economy.
This is one of the two projects that the Government has promoted through the first public call for 5G pilot grants, resolved in the spring of 2019. This initiative has a budget of 25.4 million euros, of which 6.3 million euros are co-financed by Red.es from EU ERDF funds. Vodafone will allocate an additional 1.8 million to the project not included in the grant.
