The Port of Algeciras had the opportunity to participate in the eighth edition of the Smart Digital Ports of the Future event, organized by Port Technology International, held on September 24th and 25th in the Dutch city of Rotterdam.
The event, which brought together over 100 attendees, featured more than 45 speakers from leading European ports and top companies in the maritime-port industry. Through various panels, experts in maritime transport, ports, and technology analyzed the key trends and challenges facing the sector.
Representing the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), Jesús Medina, Head of the Technological Development Area, participated in one of the keynotes on the first day, alongside Ángel Martínez, Senior Product Manager at NextPort.AI. Under the title “Enabling Port Digital Ecosystem to Optimize Vessel Operations with AI,” they explained how innovation and applied artificial intelligence can optimize the management of passenger vessel berths and waiting times, enhance the orchestration of port processes at the sea-land interface, and improve operational decision-making in the complex scenario of the Operation Strait Crossing (OPE).
Throughout the two days of the event, multiple key topics were addressed, including discussions on the dual objectives of digitization and sustainability in ports, the state of the art in digital adoption, and success stories on how ports are leveraging the potential of emerging technologies such as 5G or drones.
