The Port of Algeciras Bay has participated in the last hours in the launching of the European project ePIcenter, whose objective is the optimization of the logistics chain in the transport of goods, based on the development of technological solutions and in which Algeciras will act as a pilot port.
The project, led by the Port of Antwerp, is funded by the European research and innovation program Horizon 2020, and is formed by an international consortium of 36 entities. Among them are the Port Authority Bay of Algeciras (APBA), the semi-automated container terminal Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTI Algeciras), and the company ESES-Connectainer, which has patented a container that will reduce the transport of empty equipment globally.
Within the framework of this initiative, the APBA will share its experience in modularization, digitalization and artificial intelligence. Likewise, given the high maritime connectivity of the Port of Algeciras Bay with the main world port enclaves, the Strait dock will have a relevant role in the analysis and evaluation of the benefits provided by the optimization tools developed by the Consortium.
The ePIcenter project will focus on providing practical solutions with a tangible impact that increase the efficiency and sustainability of global logistics chains, both operationally and environmentally. The project has a duration of 42 months and involves representatives from major ports, forwarding companies, shippers, logistics operators, research centers and technology companies at an international level.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 861584.
