The president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and vice president of the association of Mediterranean ports MEDPORTS, Gerardo Landaluce, participates this week in the international congress MARLOG 14 held in the city of Alexandria (Egypt) under the theme “Implementations of Artificial Intelligence towards the construction of the digital future”. In his speech, Landaluce has highlighted the use of innovation and digitization in the Port of Algeciras to optimize port operations. Thus, he presented practical examples of how technological innovations, and artificial intelligence itself, are transforming the Port of Algeciras in various areas: such as container traffic (optimizing stopover times and operations, with solutions such as Port Collaborative Decision Making applied to the Gemini project of the Maersk Group), the fuel supply sector (bunkering) or RORO traffic (trucks), improving efficiency and reducing waiting times, as demonstrated by the operation of the Strait Crossing itself.

Gerardo Landaluce has explained that the promotion of innovation, digitalization and Artificial Intelligence itself are key pieces for the Port of Algeciras and its Port Community: “Today artificial intelligence is revolutionizing many sectors in our society and, of course, also maritime transport, logistics and ports. It allows us to analyze large volumes of data, predict results and prescribe operations to gain in efficiency, safety and sustainability. An example of this in the Port of Algeciras are practical applications, such as, in the OPE, the application of the Digital Twin, or, in containerized traffics, our collaborative work platform, which has allowed us to qualify for the Gemini Cooperation, the new project of Maersk and Hapag Lloyd”.
Marlog 14 – a meeting organized by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport – brings together international experts in Egypt to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the shipping and logistics sectors.
