The Sevillian architectural firm Planho Consultores, which was awarded the contract for the drafting of the project, presented, last Monday 25th, the execution project of the Multifunctional Building to the Commission for the Port-city Development of Algeciras.
The initiative, integrated in the Lago Marítimo Project, contemplates two of the three building pieces that will house the area as well as the exterior urbanization associated with the building complex. The third building, which is at an advanced stage of construction, will be connected to the other two by footbridges and will house the UCA-SEA R+D+i Center of the University of Cadiz.
The building complex to be built by the Algeciras Port Authority to the north of Llano Amarillo will be self-sufficient, efficient, flexible, integrated, light and innovative, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in the country.
Designed to have almost zero energy consumption, it will have a glass façade and natural ventilation system with innovations that will reduce its carbon footprint, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in the country and ranking it as “excellent” according to the BREEAM sustainable construction certification.
The east and west facades will be protected from the sun with a system of motorized louvers. The roof will be completely covered by 280 photovoltaic panels that will provide up to 126 kWp, capable of supplying half of the electrical energy required by the facilities for air conditioning, lighting and hot water.
It also provides sustainable innovations in the exterior urbanization, such as the collection of rainwater in 2 tanks of 73 cubic meters of capacity each located under the green areas that will allow them to be irrigated for a month, without the need to consume from the mains supply.
The complex, with a usable area of 10,000 square meters and a budget of more than 23 million euros, is based on the original idea of the APBA’s architect, Manuel Matoses, with spaces for the Port Museum and Port Interpretation Center (Port Center), Port Center for Logistics Innovation, coffee shop, institutional area or auditorium surrounded by a large hall that will serve as an exhibition gallery. The auditorium, for which materials such as bamboo will be used because of its low carbon footprint, will feature an original wave-shaped roof. Among the institutional facilities, the large oval-shaped meeting room on the top floor stands out. The basement floor will be used for parking, archives and storage.
The project presented is one of the main actions of the Algeciras Lago Marítimo project, which continues to add steps after the signing in February 2020 of the protocol between the APBA, the Junta de Andalucía and the City Council of Algeciras to act in the section between the Llano Amarillo and the bridge of the North Access to the port.
