The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) participated last April 2nd and 3rd, in the III edition of the Brokerage Event that the European Technology Platform ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) held in the city of Brussels.
This event, which brought together more than 120 representatives of the logistics and intermodal transport sector, arose with the aim of analyzing and exploring, under the prism of ALICE, the new funding opportunities for R+D+i promoted by the European Commission. On this occasion, the conference focused on the next Horizon Europe Work Programmes 2025, in addition to other mechanisms such as those promoted by the EIT Urban Mobility or the European Space Agency (ESA), and its BASS program, for the development of logistics solutions based on space technology and assets.
The participating members had the opportunity to expose, share and discuss, through working dynamics and 1-to-1 match-making sessions, ideas, concepts and innovative solutions with which to approach the conception of projects and consortia for future Horizon Europe calls. The different sessions constituted a powerful launching pad for collaboration and connection of innovators, organizations, clusters and technology centers to start co-creating solutions for smart and sustainable freight transport. Future initiatives to align industry needs with the direction of European research were also addressed, as well as the role of ALICE and its members in influencing recommendations to the European Commission in the upcoming Work Programmes 2026 and 2025.

Among the participants were representatives from various sectors, including the maritime-port sector with Port Authorities such as those of the Algeciras Bay, Valencia, Barcelona, Trieste or Duisburg; logistics operators such as La Poste Groupe, dbh Logistics or GEODIS; logistics clusters such as ALIA, Logistop or LIMOWA; technology providers such as Transporeon, Transmetrics, Marlo or ICCS-iSENSE Group; Research Centers and Universities such as TU Delft, CERTH/HIT, RISE, Deusto or CENIT; and large retail and manufacturing companies such as Renault, Volvo, Scania, P&G and L’Oreal.
It should be noted that the Horizon Europe 2025 call program contains a total of 19 topics of a logistical nature, representing a total of 383 million euros in funding and the opportunity to carry out 48 new projects. Among the most outstanding are proposals such as “Accelerating freight transport and logistics digital innovation”, “Integrating inland waterway transport in Smart Shipping and multimodal logistics chains” or “Real time monitoring of regulated and non-regulated emissions from all types of vessels and other port activities in order to enforce emissions limits in waterfront cities”.
