On Wednesday, September 3, the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) participated in the conference “Giving voice to data: Ports, Data-Driven Organizations“, part of the ”UIMP Port Week 2025″ series of meetings organized by the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), the Port Authority of Santander (APS), and the Spanish State Ports Authority (OPPE), which took place at the iconic Magdalena Palace in Santander.
On this occasion, the 2025 edition was structured around four meetings that addressed some of the main challenges currently facing the sector: innovation in smart synchromodal transport, data integration in port management, the circular economy, and leadership in talent management.
On behalf of the APBA, Juan González, Head of the Data Analytics Information System in the Technological Development Department, participated in the third meeting, led by Lara Lloret, senior scientist at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria (IFCA-CSIC), and Armando López, head of the Technical Advisory and Cultural Heritage Department at Puertos del Estado. The meeting was divided into two main sections: “Data as a strategic asset” and “The digital transformation of ports into data-driven organizations.” The series of presentations covered topics such as public data policies and strategies, the organizational and cultural challenges of a data-driven business model, guidelines for addressing the cyber resilience of the supply chain with emerging technologies, and the new role of ports in the information age. Speakers included Álvaro Rodríguez, Deputy Director of Strategy and Business Development at Puertos del Estado; Christian Manrique, Head of Infrastructure and Public Domain at APS; and Mariela Gutarra, Leader of Government and Digital Transformation at the National Port Authority of Peru.
Specifically, González outlined the work carried out by APBA in recent years. The bulk of the presentation focused on data governance, which consists of the policies and procedures necessary to ensure that data generates value for the different departments within the organization. This was followed by a discussion on data in ports, in which the speakers from the second block participated.

Port Week, held between September 2 and 5, is conceived and organized by the APS, the UIMP, and Puertos del Estado as a summer school aimed at offering training programs aligned with the sector’s priorities and promoting a culture of continuous learning, adapted to the demands of a globalized environment.
It is aimed at managers, executives, and professionals working in the port-logistics sector, both in the public and private spheres; professionals and researchers interested in the study of these infrastructures; students who wish to develop their professional career in the port industry; entrepreneurs; and startups.
