The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) participated, last 8th June, in the 15th edition of the MedPorts&Shipping Summit of the Mediterranean Logistics & Transport Week (Medalogistics Barcelona), within the framework of the International Logistics Exhibition (SIL) 2023.
The event, which took place in the SIL’s Knowledge Pass Auditorium, was organised by the Barcelona Free Trade Zone Consortium, the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) and the MEDports association, with the collaboration of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. On this occasion, the debate focused on the reflection of the main macroeconomic and geopolitical trends, analysing their impact on the different port platforms, from the change in global supply chains, digitalisation, climate change and energy transition.
The day was articulated through 3 Key Notes, in the form of round tables, and featured a selection of top-level speakers, industry leaders and recognised experts, including representatives, among others, from ESPO, OMMP, the Valenciaport Foundation and the ports of Algeciras, Barcelona, Tanger Med and Marseille.
In the case of the APBA, Jesús Medina, Head of the Technological Development Area, participated in the last Key Note, entitled “Intelligent Ports of the Mediterranean: driving digital transformation“, together with the director of PORTIC Barcelona, Javier Gallardo, the director of the Escola Europea, Eduard Rodes, and the director of Training of the Valenciaport Foundation, Ana Rumbeu, which was moderated by the deputy director general of the Port of Barcelona, Santiago Garcia-Milà. They addressed points of interest such as the new profiles needed in the maritime transport sector, the digital transformation of ports and the application of new technologies.
Specifically, Medina was in charge of highlighting, on the one hand, the impact of the digital transformation in the Port of Algeciras, as a response to the need and differential desire to offer a service of excellent quality and efficiency, in an environment of extreme competitiveness such as that of the Strait of Gibraltar. And, on the other hand, he also highlighted the important role that will play in the future to consolidate this process of change, the digital training of the logistics-port network, and how the ports must develop their own initiatives to manage and promote the capacities of the organisation, create and attract local talent and make the port logistics sector attractive for technological profiles.
