The Navantia Training Centre (NTC) in San Fernando hosted last Tuesday the “Impulso&Crece” Conference, an initiative organized by the Fundación Instituto Ricardo Valle de Innovación (Innova IRV) together with the Consejería de Industria, Energía y Minas de la Junta de Andalucía, which brought together professionals and experts to address the challenges of digitalization, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in the naval and logistic-port sector.
The inauguration of the event was attended by Inmaculada Olivero, territorial delegate of Cadiz; Alberto Cervantes, director of the Corvettes and Maritime Action Vessels Business of Navantia; and Javier Lopez, vice president of University Ecosystem of the Innova IRV Foundation.
In particular, the Port Authority of the Algeciras Bay (APBA) was represented by Jesús Medina, head of the Technological Development Area (ADT), who participated in the series of presentations that followed. Medina shared success stories in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Port of Algeciras to, for example, optimize the management of berthing and waiting times for passenger ships, favor the orchestration of port processes at the maritime-land interface, develop an intelligent system for operational decision making in bunkering operations facilitating “just in time” port calls, or detect spills and spills in the marine environment in advance.
On the other hand, he highlighted how the Port of Algeciras has implemented advanced technologies to strengthen cybersecurity and optimize its operations. With tools such as Darktrace, an NDR platform based on artificial intelligence, early detection of anomalies and automatic response to threats is ensured. In addition, he raised the need for cybersecurity awareness , considering the palpable reality of cyber-attacks that the maritime-port industry also suffers.
The conference also included presentations by Juan Jesús Carretero, head of Navantia’s Naval Systems Center of Excellence, who spoke about “AI and cybersecurity in Navantia’s products”, and Manuel Francisco Martínez, CTO of the Port of Huelva, who addressed the challenges of digital transformation and how it is being tackled in the port of Huelva.
