The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has presented its progress in innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the meeting “The Future of Logistics: AI, Automation and Sustainability”, organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Seville in the framework of the Interreg Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) Nexomar project. This project, coordinated by the Andalusian Council of Chambers of Commerce and co-financed by the EU, aims to boost the competitiveness and internationalization of companies related to port activity in Alentejo, Algarve and Andalusia.
The event, held at the Exploraterra space in Seville, focused especially on the use of tools related to AI applied to the supply chain, as well as on innovation and automation of logistics companies, promoting sustainability through the application of advanced technologies.

Jesús Medina Blanco, head of the Technological Development Area of the APBA, intervened on behalf of the Port Authority to explain how AI is being applied to improve the operational efficiency of the Port of Algeciras. Medina detailed the development of the Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM) projects, through which information is exchanged in real time with container terminals, shipping companies and technical-nautical services, among others, to optimize operations and reduce waiting times. He also highlighted how AI is already providing the operational management of the Algeciras enclave with predictive information, to know in advance what is going to happen, and prescriptive information, to recommend actions, thus transforming port logistics as we know it.
The meeting was also attended by Francisco Herrero, president of the Chamber of Commerce and the president of the Port Authority of Seville, Rafael Carmona. In addition, the project partners from Portugal and Andalusia, expert speakers, who shared their knowledge and perspectives in various presentations and panel discussions, and more than 90 companies held B2B meetings.
It should be noted that the Nexomar project is a project aimed at boosting maritime logistics activity through the enhancement of the organizational and technological capabilities of the logistics system in the port environments of Alentejo, Algarve and Andalusia to promote internationalization and increase the foreign presence of companies in both the logistics and production areas.
