The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) held, last Thursday, November 30th, the launching ceremony of the second edition of its initiative addressed to Training Centers, adding new students and expanding the offer of companies in which they will be able to complement their training.
Thus begins, within the school year 2023-2024, the continuation of the initiative promoted and coordinated by the Area of Technological Development of the APBA since the previous year, and whose objective is none other than to bring the port and logistics activity to young digital talent, facilitating their integration into the labor market and facilitating the expansion of the productive fabric, based on technology and innovation, in the area in which the Port of Algeciras is located. This is a line of action that is part of the ambitious program for the attraction, retention and creation of digital talent in the environment of the enclave of Algeciras, known as Algeciras Port Digital Academy.
In particular, the APBA announced all the news in a meeting that took place in the Millán Picazo Auditorium and was attended by students, teachers and business organizations participating in this new edition. The event also served, on the one hand, for the educational centers to present their educational offer in the fields of Innovation and Digital Transformation and, on the other hand, for the companies that are part of the initiative to detail their lines of work in these areas and the opportunities they can offer to future students.
The event began with the welcome of the president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, who stressed that “to maintain the traffic figures of the Port of Algeciras and continue leading the ranking of efficiency in Europe of the World Bank, the digital transformation and innovation is essential“. Therefore, Landaluce considers vital the creation of a “local quarry” to boost the logistics-port activity and respond to the labor needs demanded by companies in the sector.
Then Jesús Medina, Head of the Technological Development Area of the Port Authority, took the floor, who, after thanking the organizations that make possible this initiative of “strategic connection between the port industry and talent“, explained that this line of action is part of the Innovation Strategy of the Port of Algeciras, to which, under the umbrella of Algeciras Port Digital Academy, many other training actions such as the Expert Course in Digital Transformation applied to Port Logistics, together with the University of Cadiz; the digital training program Digital Trekking, together with the Cepsa Foundation; or the next inclusion of the Port of Algeciras as a 5G training center for the province of Cadiz, with the help of Vodafone.
Then, it was the turn to make a retrospective of the results of the first edition. Paco Saucedo, Head of Information Systems of the APBA, and coordinator of the previous edition, made a positive balance of this first experience, of which he highlighted “it has been possible because there are people in the companies of the Port of Algeciras who have committed and supported the initiative, as well as the own teaching staff and the students”. Precisely, three students from last year, José María Pérez, Javier Fernández and Rubén Canas, shared with the attendees their experience during their work experience in TTI Algeciras, Maersk and NextPort.AI, respectively.
The second part of the event focused on the current and expanded offer of educational centers and leading multinational entities, in their respective fields, participating in the initiative. First, Carmelo Villegas and Mariano González, respective teachers of IES Saladillo and IES Kursaal, which joins in this new edition, presented the educational opportunities of their centers. From the higher level training cycle “Development of multiplatform applications” of the first one, to the training cycle “Development of web applications” and the specialization course in “Cybersecurity in information technology environments” offered by the second one.
On the business side, representatives of the companies that took part in the first edition attended, specifically Fernando González, Senior Engineer Manager at Maersk Technology; Daniel Serrano, Systems Manager at TTIA; and Alejandro García, Technology Manager at NextPort.AI. In this second edition, the organizations APM Terminals and Sopra Steria were represented by Salvador León, TOS Service Manager at APMT; and Carlos García, South Agency Manager at Sopra Steria.
All of them brought the innovative vision of their entities, their commitment to the development of digital training, and were excited and motivated to be part of the dynamization of talent in the logistics-port ecosystem of the region.
The closing of the event included the recognition of the best Final Degree Project (TFG) of the previous year to the students Rubén Canas Moraleda and Juan Manuel González Morcillo, from IES Saladillo, for their work “APPBA Employee manager”.
