The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) is participating in the Smart Mobility Analytics (SMA) project, aimed at developing a system based on cameras and artificial intelligence, through the application of advanced detection algorithms based on neural networks, capable of analysing passenger and vehicle flows. The resulting product is an integrated mobility management system that makes it possible to extract objective data such as, for example, the waiting times of passengers and the use made of the different spaces in a port terminal.
The objective of the pilot project is to digitise operational processes in a passenger port terminal (Maritime Station, cruise terminals, etc.) through the use of vision technology. ), through the use of artificial vision, in order to offer a decision-making support tool that allows, on the one hand, the correct dimensioning of port spaces to reduce congestion and waiting times for passengers and vehicles throughout their passage through the port; and, on the other hand, to provide a more efficient service to passengers, vehicles and public and private transport providers, even sharing information in real time with these users.
The project, which is financed by the Ports 4.0 Fund, in the category of Commercial Projects, is developed by Delonia Software, an engineering company that offers multidisciplinary services in the field of digital transformation and development of solutions, systems and services based on Big Data and artificial intelligence, among others, for sectors such as banking, telecommunications, engineering or health.
The scope of the project, for the particular case of the Port of Algeciras, includes the testing of operational management functionalities for vehicle and passenger traffic in the intermediaries of the Maritime Station of Algeciras, including the detection of the degree of occupation of the parking areas, the monitoring of the entry and exit flows of vehicles and buses in these areas or the counting of passengers entering and leaving the Terminal.
Finally, it should be noted that the Port Authority of Barcelona is also participating in the project as a development environment for the different use cases, where the operations of the Port of Barcelona’s cruise terminal will be specifically analysed.
Expected results:
- Evaluate the technical feasibility of implementing a system based on artificial vision in the Port of Algeciras for the management of vehicles during the OPE.
- Provide real-time information on vehicle flows during the OPE period to support decision making on the organization and sizing of port spaces.
- Conduct validation studies of the replicability of the Delonia solution in alternative operational environments, in terms of the use case to be developed, the parameters to be analyzed, and the deployment modality.
- Evolve and scale Delonia’s proprietary technology, making possible its customization for different port terminal managers.
