The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) participates in the Smart Mobility Analytics (SMA) project, aimed at developing a system based on cameras and artificial intelligence, through the application of advanced detection algorithms based on neural networks, capable of analyzing passenger and vehicle flows. The resulting product is an integrated mobility management system that enables the extraction of objective data such as, for example, waiting times and the use made of the different areas of a port terminal.
The objective of the pilot project is to digitize operational processes in a passenger port terminal (Maritime Station, cruise terminals, etc.), through the use of artificial vision, in order to offer a decision support tool that allows, on the one hand, to correctly dimension the port spaces to reduce congestion and waiting times of passengers and vehicles along their passage through the port; and, on the other hand, to provide a more efficient service to passengers, vehicles and public and private transport providers, even sharing information in real time with these users.
The project, which is financed by the Ports 4.0 Fund, in the category of Commercial Projects, is developed by Delonia Software, an engineering company that offers multidisciplinary services in digital transformation and development of solutions, systems and services based on Big Data and artificial intelligence, among others, for sectors such as banking, telecommunications, engineering or health.
The scope of the project, for the particular case of the Port of Algeciras, contemplates the testing of operational management functionalities for passenger vehicle traffic at the Galera Pier, including the detection of the degree of occupation of the boarding and pre-boarding plots; the counting of the flow of vehicles entering and leaving these areas; and the detection of the operational status of each area.
Finally, it should be noted that the Port Authority of Barcelona also participates in the project as a development environment of the different use cases, where specifically the operation of the cruise terminal of the Port of Barcelona will be analyzed.
Expected results:
- Evaluate the technical feasibility of implementing a system based on artificial vision in the Port of Algeciras for the management of vehicles during the OPE.
- Provide real-time information on vehicle flows during the OPE period to support decision making on the organization and sizing of port spaces.
- Conduct validation studies of the replicability of the Delonia solution in alternative operational environments, in terms of the use case to be developed, the parameters to be analyzed, and the deployment modality.
- Evolve and scale Delonia’s proprietary technology, making possible its customization for different port terminal managers.
