Summary:
The objective of the “Algeciras SafePort” project is to improve the management of ocean-meteorological risks in port environments so that the port players can operate and develop its activity in a more secure, efficient and sustainable manner.
With this objective, the project has allowed to approximate the physical environment (climate) to the areas where the port activity is developed, called Operational Areas of Interest (OAI)
To this end the measurement network has been increased for greater coverage and measurement variables, new high-resolution models have been developed to predict ocean-meteorological variables in the OAI, and IT tools have been developed (Environmental Control Panel- CMA) to exploit this information and thus facilitate decision making and reduce the risk in terms of port design, planning and performance.
Innovation of the project:
- Monitoring system and high-resolution prediction system (wind, waves, sea level and currents) in the OAIs of the Algeciras Port.
- IT tool (CMA) for the exploitation of the data and information provided by the models according to the different end users (AAPP, shipping companies, operators, repairs, etc.).
Products of the project:
- Measurement network expanded and supported with real time data acquisition.
- Historical series (1979-2014) homogeneous in time and space. Wave, wind, sea level in the Strait and Algeciras Port.
- Wind, wave and agitation prediction system in the OAIs of the Algeciras Port.
- Web application- environmental dashboard that includes: Maritime Climate Atlas, operational Risk Prediction Model, Warning system for overflow in Tarifa Port and Wave Atlas generated by vessels (https://cma.puertos.es).
Usability /Application:
- Infrastructure design and conservation
- Management and operational planning
- Technical-nautical services assignment
- Management of maritime traffic and anchorage areas
