The Port of Algeciras was present at the recent edition of the GreenTech event, organized by Port Technology International, which was held from 29 to 30 April in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.
On this occasion, the event brought together more than 60 attendees from major European ports, port terminals and technology companies in the maritime-port industry. Through various panels and round tables, experts in port logistics, sustainability and decarbonization analyzed the main trends and challenges facing the sector on its way to climate neutrality, the central focus of the conference.
In particular, the Port of Algeciras was presented as a success story in the decarbonization of the industry, thanks to the inspiring presentation by Miguel Montesinos, CEO of the technological company Prodevelop. Montesinos showed how the cutting-edge digital platform “Posidonia PortCDM” is driving, in the enclave of Algeciras, tangible benefits in favor of the decarbonization of the industry and the reduction of emissions, based on a change of mentality focused on collaboration, the exchange of real-time and predictive information, and the promotion of Just-in-Time port scales. During the presentation, the results obtained to date were highlighted, from more fluid, coordinated and efficient port operations, to the operational and emissions impact generated by the optimization of waiting times, inactivity and previous anchorages during the vessel call process. All of this demonstrates that Port Community’s use of digital and collaborative tools is a powerful example of how technology and sustainability can move forward in sync.
It should be noted that the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has been a pioneer in promoting the “Port Collaborative Decision-Making (PortCDM)” concept in the maritime-port industry. The challenges of collaborative decision making began to be addressed at the Port of Algeciras in 2017 under the innovative pilot project “Pit-Stop Port Operations Algeciras”. The pilot laid the solid foundations necessary to support the development and implementation of this type of platforms in the Port of Algeciras. An example of this is the product developed by the technology company Provedelop (Posidonia PortCDM), which also had the support of the Ports 4.0 Fund, managed by the Public Body Puertos del Estado (OPPE), and of the APBA itself in its role as Port Living Lab of international reference.

The event also included topical issues related to the port sector, including the proliferation of green digital corridors, the adoption and maturity of the fuels of the future, the benefits of electrification, the challenges in the management of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) or the use of digital twins to contribute to a sustainable port environment.
Speakers included representatives from the ports of Gothenburg, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona or Bilbao; leading global terminal operators such as APM Terminals, Eurogate, Yilport or Contship; and pioneering technology companies such as Kalmar, Awake.ai, Conroo, Kempower or Hexagon.
