Summary:
The management of road traffic in ports and port terminals is currently a growing challenge for logistics and international trade, particularly due to the increase in the volume of goods in recent decades. As global trade has grown, some port infrastructures have found it difficult to expand at the same pace, creating bottlenecks and congestion in the access and internal roads of these facilities.
In addition, the lack of integration and synchronization between the various actors in the supply chain, such as carriers, port operators, customs and local authorities, exacerbates this situation. The increase in the time it takes for goods to pass through port facilities can generate significant economic losses, both in terms of the direct costs of delays and the negative impact on the planning of logistics operations. All this, greatly affecting the quality of the service offered, causing dissatisfaction among users and customers.
In particular, the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has among its innovation challenges to find new technological solutions to improve the flow of traffic in the port area, especially in the areas most susceptible to congestion problems, thus optimizing the transit of goods, passengers and users of the Port of Algeciras in general.
In response to this situation, and other open innovation challenges, the APBA participated in the European project AspBAN (Atlantic Smart Ports Blue Acceleration Network), which allowed identifying innovative solutions at international level, not necessarily linked to the logistics-port sector, with which to promote the competitiveness of that industry. Among them, the solutions of the German start-up Isarsoft.
Founded in 2019, Isarsoft currently has around 1,000 deployed use cases of its machine vision product, based on video recognition technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. Through this innovative technology, they have developed functionalities such as occupancy monitoring, people flow evaluation, queue management and traffic frequency detection at airports, parking lots and other transport stations.
For this reason, the APBA is collaborating with Isarsoft in an innovative pilot project, focused on testing this artificial vision tool in the facilities of the Port of Algeciras. In that sense, the project contemplates the development of different use cases that address operational needs in the field of land traffic and multimodal transport.
Expected results:
- Apply AI for the automatic detection of events of interest from the analysis of images and videos coming from the Image Capture System (SCI) of the APBA itself and without the need of specific devices that require external interaction (sensors, tags, beacons, etc.).
- To test a real-time monitoring and analysis platform for traffic flows in the Port of Algeciras.
- To have a more detailed knowledge of the behavior of road traffic in the facilities of the Port of Algeciras, with which to minimize traffic congestion problems in order to improve the quality of service offered.
- To evaluate key indicators that, in the future, will make it possible to provide quality information to carriers, facilitating decision-making in the planning of their stay at the port, thus improving their operational efficiency and reducing, in turn, the emissions associated with heavy traffic
