Summary:
AIS is the acronym for “Automatic Identification System”, an identification system for ships that allows them to transmit their identity, position, course, speed and other data to nearby vessels and the competent authorities in the area. All this is done through a common VHF radio channel.
However, despite its availability and obvious usefulness, AIS data has not been fully exploited in many sectors of the maritime-port industry. Their integration and analysis, in combination with cutting-edge technologies, can unlock new scenarios for the optimization of maritime operations, process automation or knowledge generation.
Given this situation, one of APBA’s innovation challenges is to find innovative solutions to analyze, in real time, the data provided by the AIS system and provide useful information to be able to make strategic and operational decisions of higher quality based on new indicators. The fields of application could be related to AIS data mining, safety of navigation, vessel behavior analysis, environmental assessment, emissions inventory, trade analysis, operational performance, etc.
For this reason, the APBA is collaborating with the German start-up Space-Ship, specialized in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for the maritime industry, in an innovative project focused on obtaining an international benchmarking tool for the port competitiveness of bunkering services. All this, through the detection of port events resulting from the exploitation of AIS data and Machine Learning models.
This type of port traffic has been suffering significant fluctuations associated with the current fragility of global supply chains, and therefore, motivated by political, economic and commercial tensions or the Red Sea crisis, among other factors. Therefore, the objective of the project is to develop a detailed scorecard, based on advanced data analytics, to specifically study bunkering services in the main maritime routes.
Finally, it is worth noting that this project is co-funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) start-up incubation program and by Bavarian’s Government, with ABPA’s support as an Industry Partner to help with the product development.
Expected results:
- Explore, through AI algorithms, how to make the most of the information available in AIS systems.
- A tool, as an international prospection scorecard to support strategic and operational decision making.
- Improve the efficiency and value proposition of the Port of Algeciras Bay, from the generation of new knowledge from a competitive benchmarking.
