Summary
The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) announced the fourth edition of the Innovation Journey Ideas Competition, with the aim of continuing to promote, foster and encourage innovative activity in the Port of Algeciras Bay (hereinafter, PBA).
In the same way as in the last editions, the APBA intended that, in addition to employees and direct collaborators, all those agents of the innovative ecosystem of the Port Community who so wished (companies, university students, entrepreneurs, start-ups and individuals) could join the initiative with innovative proposals that respond to the challenges posed, in order to improve the competitiveness of the PBA and create value for its users and customers.
Alignment of innovation ideas
The scope of application of the ideas or proposals for innovation must be related to the logistics-port and maritime activity that takes place in the Port of Algeciras Bay and be aligned with one of the focuses and objectives that underpin the current Innovation Strategy.
- Competitiveness and logistics orchestration.
- Sustainability and climate neutrality.
- Innovation and talent.
Participation and evaluation of ideas
During the 6 months that the competition was open, a total of 18 ideas were received from 13 different proposers and 7 collaborating companies and/or start-ups. Of all of them, 5 of which were group proposals, 17 passed all the phases of the evaluation process, based on the stage-gate idea management methodology, which assessed, among other characteristics, the strategic fit of the ideas, the expected impact at a socio-economic level, the technical feasibility of the solution and the degree of novelty.
Finalist proposals
After the final evaluation by the Jury, 6 finalist ideas were selected:
- Intelligent roundabouts (José Carlos Lobato, APBA), in which the implementation of Intelligent roundabouts with road markings like those used in turbo roundabouts is proposed, which will also have a support system for mobility management based on artificial vision and AI.
- eXCelente (Juan Antonio Herrera, APBA), based on the incorporation of improvements in the Algeciras Port Digital Academy initiative, offering the best students substantial advantages and accompaniment during their incorporation into the labour market, so that companies in the Port Community can make use of their talent.
- Optimisation and Efficiency in the Flow of Passenger Traffic (Carlos A. Sánchez and María Román, APBA), an idea aimed at developing an intelligent system for managing the flows derived from passenger traffic operations (Ro-Pax) in the Port of Algeciras.
