Summary
Purpose of the award
After the success of the first call, the APBA, called the second edition of the ideas contest of the Innovation Journey, with the aim of continuing to promote, encourage and incentivise innovative activity in the Port of Algeciras Bay (hereinafter, PBA).
Unlike the first edition, in this call the APBA intended that, in addition to employees and direct collaborators, all those agents of the innovative ecosystem of the Port Community who so wished (companies, university students, entrepreneurs, start-ups and individuals) could join the initiative with innovative proposals that respond to the different challenges posed, in order to improve the competitiveness of the PBA and create value for its users and customers.
Innovative ideas alignment
The scope of application of the proposals had to be related to the port-logistic and maritime activity that takes place in the Port of Algeciras Bay and be aligned with one of the following innovation challenges:
- Improving the passenger and carrier experience at the Port of Algeciras (“Seamless Journey”).
- New business models based on data analysis, the use of connected devices (IoT) and collaborative platforms to achieve operational excellence (“Data has a better idea”).
- The progressive decarbonisation of the Port of Algeciras and the reduction of the environmental impact in the port-city environment (“Towards a zero carbon emissions”).
- Transforming the day to day work in the APBA (“Workplace 2.0”).
Participation and ideas assessment
During the 7 months that the Contest was open, a total of 36 ideas were received from 21 different proposers belonging to 6 departments of the APBA and 8 collaborating companies and/or start-ups. Of all of them, 17 passed all the phases of the evaluation process, based on the stage-gate ideas management methodology, which assessed, among other characteristics, the strategic fit of the ideas, the expected impact at a socio-economic level, the technical feasibility of the solution and the degree of novelty.
The challenge with the most proposals received was “New business models based on data analysis, the use of connected devices (IoT) and collaborative platforms to achieve operational excellence”, with 36% of the total number of ideas. The remaining proposals were distributed as follows: The progressive decarbonisation of the Port of Algeciras and the reduction of the environmental impact in the port-city environment (25%); Transforming the day-to-day work in the APBA (22%); Improving the passenger and carrier experience in the Port of Algeciras (17%).
Shortlisted proposals
Finally, after the assessment of the total proposals, the 6 short-listed ones were:
- “Vision Row” (Juanjo Aguilar, APBA), which proposes the implementation of a platform that, through the installation of various video cameras at strategic points in the Port, allows carriers to know in real time the state of activity at the terminal gates and the state of congestion on the access roads.
- “Excellence and competitiveness in the Strait” (Jesús Medina, APBA), whose objective is to use the data provided by the AIS system to analyse the behaviour of traffic in neighbouring ports such as Gibraltar and Tangiers and thus be able to identify weak points and opportunities for improvement of the Port compared to its competitors.
- “Generation of electricity by vehicle traffic (Jesús Matute, APBA)”, an idea that aims to replace the existing speed humps with speed humps with piezometers that generate electricity.
- “Intra-port Renewable Plant (Carlos Rodriguez, Solum)”, which proposes to install its 100% walkable solar floor in certain areas of the precinct with the aim of converting open spaces of the port into micro-plants for the generation of renewable energy.
- “Boarding card in route (Francisco Pardo, AddOcean)“, focused on taking advantage of the integration of the APBA’s own systems with those of the shipping companies operating in the Strait to enable passengers to obtain their boarding card during their journey to Algeciras via a mobile app.
- “Intelligent Mobility based on Data (Jaime Martel, ITelligent)“, which proposes the development of an application for mobile devices to offer recommendations to improve the mobility of users and customers around the Port.
