The University of Cadiz, through UCA Emprende, and the Algeciras Technology Campus Foundation (FCTA), in collaboration with the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA), held the event “Ideas Afloat: navigate as a team, innovate in the port“, an initiative that aims to promote entrepreneurship and the generation of ideas related to the port logistics sector among university students at the Bahía de Algeciras Campus.
This activity is in line with the objectives pursued by the APBA’s Algeciras Port Digital Academy programme: to promote a powerful local digital ecosystem, i.e. the development of a true ‘digital talent pool’ for all agents in the Port Community, including the APBA, based on different lines of work to create local digital talent.
For approximately three hours, around thirty students from different university degrees carried out an express ideation and prototyping process to solve a key challenge facing the logistics-port sector and the Port of Algeciras: the continuous monitoring of cargo and vehicles throughout the port facilities. To this end, they worked in multidisciplinary teams with the support of designated mentors: Juan Antonio Herrera, Head of Innovation at the APBA, Nacho Serra, Member of the APBA Technical Innovation Office, and María Niebla and Raquel Carmona, respectively head and coordinator of the Port of Algeciras Digital Entrepreneurship Centre.

The two best ideas were awarded €500 each. Before concluding the activity, the five teams gave a pitch to a jury made up of the organising entities, who decided to award the Prize for the most innovative idea and the Prize for the best-presented idea.
It should be noted that the activity was funded by the Regional Ministry of Universities and Research of the Regional Government of Andalusia.
