The president of the Algeciras Bay Port Authority, Gerardo Landaluce, and the vice-rector in functions of the Campus Algeciras Bay of the University of Cadiz, Jesús Verdú, have chaired the Tuesday 11th of July the closing ceremony of the first edition of the Expert Course in Digital Transformation applied to the Port Logistics where a total of 17 students collected their diplomas and presented the results of their end of course work on such relevant topics in this area as the “Digitization of the inspection process in container depot” or the “Optimization of the exchange of information and documentation between port agents“.
This specialisation degree links with the digitalisation and innovation strategy in the framework of the Ports 4.0 from the training, the use of new technologies and sustainability and reflects the strength of the institutional relations between the UCA, through its Campus Bahía de Algeciras, and the APBA.
With an academic equivalence of 15 ECTS credits and a total of 375 hours of specialised training, this first edition has been taught at the School of Engineering of Algeciras (ETSIA) since the first half of March but it is the intention of both parties that the second edition, in which the University of Cadiz and APBA are already working, has its permanent headquarters in the new UCA-SEA Innovation Centre in the Maritime Lake of Algeciras. With the works already completely finished, it is expected to be inaugurated and put into operation in the next few weeks.
The president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, explained his recent meeting in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations and the strategic importance of turning the Port of Algeciras into an energy Hub. For this, as well as being leaders in the application of new energy sources, “it is important that the Port of Algeciras is more efficient”, indicating that we must consider equally strategic the digital transformation and innovation “promoting, as we are already doing, a digital ecosystem around the Port of Algeciras“. In this sense, the University Expert Course in Digital Transformation Applied to Port Logistics plays a fundamental role in attracting, retaining and creating digital talent. In addition, the new Maritime Lake Innovation District will come to reinforce this strategic objective.
The Expert Course on Digital Transformation applied to Port Logistics means for the UCA, in the words of Jesús Verdú, “an example of the consolidation and reinforcement of the collaboration with a first level strategic ally such as the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, as well as a reference of the academic, training and innovation projects that we are willing to undertake together because it is the main asset of a key sector for the present and future of our region and our province”.
This University Expert is organised by the UCA and the APBA, directed by Professor Ignacio Turias, with the co-direction of Jesús Medina, head of the Technological Development Area of the Port Authority Bay of Algeciras. Its training programme is aimed at university graduates in all areas of knowledge, and for students pending completion of their studies this academic year with 30 ETCS credits remaining. Its contents are divided into three main subjects: Port Management and Logistics (basic aspects of the sector, key players in port traffic, freight traffic, governance, competition and competitiveness, port and intermodal infrastructures and railway management), Innovation and Digital Transformation in Ports (digital transformation in the port sector, innovation, enabling technologies, digital transformation strategies and innovation in the Port of Algeciras or digital ecosystem) and Process Management and Simulation (project management, Agile Scrum development methodologies, team fusion, introduction to Locode/Nocode/BPM/RPA or process simulation with a BPM. Flexterm).
