The president of the Port Authority Bay of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce, and the vice rector of the Campus Bay of Algeciras of the University of Cadiz (UCA), Maria de la Luz Martín, chaired on Wednesday, July 17, the closing ceremony of the 2nd edition of the University Expert Course in Digital Transformation applied to Port Logistics, in which a total of 13 students collected their diplomas and presented the results of their end-of-course work on a topic as relevant to the activity of the Port of Algeciras as is the optimization of the time of passage of cargo through its facilities, particularly the traffic of heavy vehicles on their way out through the North Access.
This specialization degree links with the digitalization and innovation strategy in the framework of ports 4.0 from training, the use of new technologies and sustainability, and reflects the strength of institutional relations between the UCA, through its Campus Bahía de Algeciras, and the APBA.
With an academic equivalence of 15 ECTS credits and a total of 375 hours of specialized training, this second edition, which has been sponsored by the technology company Sopra Steria, has been taught from its recent permanent headquarters in the new UCA-SEA Innovation Center.
During the welcome message, the president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, was in charge of highlighting how through digital transformation and innovation, the Port of Algeciras is promoting a leading digital ecosystem around its Port Logistics Community, which allows it to continue revalidating the title of the most efficient port in Europe and tenth worldwide in container traffic according to the World Bank. A digital ecosystem that goes beyond fundamental aspects such as operational excellence or the decarbonization of the sector; as it also pursues the creation, attraction and retention of a local digital pool of young students. And good proof of this is this Expert Course, framed in the strategic project of talent management of the APBA, commonly known as Algeciras Port Digital Academy.
For her part, the Vice Chancellor of the Campus Bahía de Algeciras, María de la Luz Martín, emphasized the new successes harvested by this second edition, highlighting how from the union of strategic partners such as the APBA and the UCA work together to meet the training needs demanded by the companies of the socio-economic fabric of our region, thus facilitating the connection of the labor market with the logistics-port sector. She also highlighted the emblematic project of the Maritime Lake, where the UCA-SEA Center is located, which forms an innovation district in Algeciras and an example in terms of digitization, research and knowledge transfer in ports, logistics and maritime transport.
This University Expert is organized by the UCA and the APBA, directed by Professor Ignacio Turias, with the co-direction of Jesús Medina, head of the Technological Development Area of the Port Authority Bay of Algeciras. Its training program is aimed at university graduates and graduates in all areas of knowledge, and for students pending completion of their studies this academic year with 30 ETCS credits remaining. Its contents are divided into three main modules: Port Management and Logistics (basic aspects of the sector, protagonists of port traffic, freight traffic, governance, competition and competitiveness, port and intermodal infrastructures or railroad management), Innovation and Digital Transformation in Ports (digital transformation in the port sector, innovation, enabling technologies, digital transformation strategies and innovation in the Port of Algeciras or digital ecosystem) and Process Management and Simulation (project management, Agile Scrum development methodologies, merging teams, introduction to Locode/Nocode/BPM/RPA or process simulation).
