The Innovation Committee of the Port of Algeciras has held in the last days the first of its quarterly meetings. In the course of the same Jesus Medina, Chief Innovation & Information Officer of the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA), has assumed the Presidency of the Committee for the next two years. The aim of the initiative is to identify common industry challenges, evaluate innovative solutions, support innovation generated in the Bay of Algeciras and accompany it, as well as identify ways of collaboration and funding mechanisms. “It is one more step to innovate in a more orderly and coordinated way with the agents of the Port Community,” explained Medina.
The Innovation Committee started in spring with the opening of the period for companies and institutions to express their interest in belonging to it. Once the deadline closed, there are finally 36 members of the Committee between Vocalities (companies and institutions operating in Algeciras) and Expert Advisors (public or private entities that can guide in new technologies and innovation): Algeciras Bay Pilots’ Corporation, MAERSK, Alonso Forwarding, ATEIA, TTIA, FRS, REMESA, Comercio Exterior Souto, Servicios Generales del Estrecho, Grupo Piedra, AESBA, Asociación Cargadores de España (ACE), CEPSA, Operinter, Bernardino Abad, Acerinox, UCA, UCA-ETSI, McValnera, FCTA, NextPort, Tecnalia, IDOM, Sopra, Emergya, WISeKey, Cremades, Hiades, TRADE, Mara&Price, OTI, Provedelop, Algeciras Port Youth Comunity, Pléyone and Gibraldrone, apart from the own APBA.
During the meeting, the participants reviewed the proposal for the future Regulation that will govern the operation of the Committee. In addition, the participating Expert Advisors had the opportunity to present the projects in which they work and success stories of what is called Open Innovation. Precisely, the Committee has agreed to open a call to receive what has been called Innovations by Algeciras, i.e. specific cases of innovative solutions that have emerged in the Port Community of the Port of Algeciras and that could have application in the different business models of the sector.
